Canon Printer Guide: PIXMA, MAXIFY, imageCLASS and More

Last reviewed

Canon is known for photo-friendly inkjets, but its range also includes business inkjets and laser printers. Model names can be long and similar, so knowing which family your printer belongs to makes it much easier to find the right manual, supplies and settings. This page outlines the major Canon lines sold in the US and links to our general how-to guides.

Canon printer families

  • Canon PIXMA

Canon’s main inkjet line for homes, ranging from basic all-in-ones to photo-focused models with additional ink colors. Many PIXMA printers use separate ink cartridges for each color.

  • Canon MAXIFY

Inkjet printers and all-in-ones designed for small and home offices, generally emphasizing document printing, faster output and business features such as document feeders.

  • Canon MegaTank

Refillable ink tank models, sold within the PIXMA and MAXIFY families, that are filled from ink bottles rather than cartridges.

  • Canon imageCLASS (US)

Canon’s laser printer and multifunction line in the US market, available in monochrome and color for home offices and businesses. Other regions may use different names for similar products.

Official apps and utilities

  • Canon PRINT app

Canon’s official mobile app for setting up supported printers, printing and scanning from phones and tablets, and checking ink levels. Supported features vary by printer model.

  • Computer software

Canon offers drivers and utilities for Windows and macOS for many models through its support site. What is available depends on the printer and operating system.

  • A note on names

App names and availability change over time and can differ between countries. Download Canon software only from Canon’s official website or your device’s official app store.

Official Canon support, drivers and manuals

For drivers, firmware, manuals, warranty questions and hardware faults, go directly to the manufacturer: Canon U.S.A. Support . This is Canon’s US support site. Owners in other regions should use the official Canon support site for their own country.

Notes for Canon owners

  • Identify your model precisely. Canon model names usually combine a family name with letters and numbers, often printed on the front or top of the printer. Small differences in the name can mean different supplies or features, so copy the full name exactly when searching the support site.

  • Use official drivers. Your operating system may add the printer automatically, but for full scanning and maintenance features, Canon’s own driver package may be needed. Avoid third-party “driver download” sites and anyone who calls or messages offering to fix your printer for a fee or asks for remote access to your computer.

  • Firmware updates. Many network-capable Canon printers can check for firmware updates from the control panel, and some updates are available through Canon’s software. Updates can fix bugs and add features; follow the instructions for your model and do not turn the printer off mid-update.

  • Maintenance tools. On PIXMA and MAXIFY models, nozzle checks, printhead cleaning and alignment are typically found in a Maintenance or Setup menu on the printer, in the computer driver’s maintenance tab, or in the Canon PRINT app. On imageCLASS lasers, look in the control panel menus or the printer’s built-in web page. Names and locations vary.

Frequently asked questions

Is MegaTank a separate product line from PIXMA?

MegaTank describes Canon’s refillable ink tank system. In the US it appears on certain PIXMA and MAXIFY models, so a printer can be both a PIXMA and a MegaTank model.

Why does the Canon US site not list my printer?

Your printer may have been sold in a different region. Try the official Canon support site for the country where it was purchased.

Can Super Laser Guide register or repair my Canon printer?

No. We are an independent education site and do not provide repairs, warranty service or product registration. Contact Canon through its official support channels.
